(PatriotsUnited.org) – Vice President Kamala Harris seems fated to replace President Joe Biden as the Democratic Party’s nominee, after securing the required delegate support weeks ahead of the convention. By late Monday night, Harris had garnered support from some 2,574 delegates, well over the 1,976 majority required to head up the ticket.
This groundbreaking change comes in the wake of President Joe Biden’s July 21st statement that he was no longer seeking re-election. Harris, who recently led Trump by 4 points in a poll of U.S. voters, has stressed her support for reproductive rights, gun control, and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. She has also received public support from former President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Former President Barack Obama, who has allegedly played a huge behind-the-scenes role in the Biden-Harris administration, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, are yet to endorse her.
During a call to his recent campaign staffer, Biden stressed his support for Harris’s Presidential bid. He said he hoped his supporters would lend her the same effort as their “mission” was the same. Harris was also endorsed by the AFL-CIO, the biggest trade union federation in the United States. The federation’s President Liz Shuler praised Harris for allegedly co-leading “the most pro-labor administration in history”.
High-profile governors such as Gavin Newsom of California, Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan, and Pennsylvania’s Josh Shapiro had been touted as possible replacements for Biden, but have now all expressed their support for Harris. It is currently unknown whether any of these figures could run as her VP pick.
Harris’ hasty campaign has broken records for the highest figure of presidential candidate donations within 24 hours, showing how she has strong financial support to replace Biden. Despite Harris’ uptick in some recent polls, she was an unpopular candidate in her bid for the Presidential nomination in 2020 and has often proved controversial with voters.
