Democratic Socialists just went 3-for-3 in New York City primaries — and they’re now pointing at House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, saying “You’re next.”
Story Snapshot
- Democratic Socialist of America (DSA)-backed candidates swept all three New York City congressional primaries, unseating two sitting members of Congress endorsed by Jeffries.
- Jeffries once vowed he would “never bend the knee to hard-left democratic socialism” — but two of his endorsed incumbents just lost to DSA challengers.
- DSA members chanted “You’re next!” targeting Jeffries at a victory party, and a DSA-aligned city council member has already filed paperwork to run against him.
- Jeffries downplayed the losses, saying he’s “not making enemies on Capitol Hill,” but critics say that response shows how little he understands the threat.
A Clean Sweep No One in the Establishment Saw Coming
New York City’s June 2026 Democratic primaries delivered a stunning blow to the party’s establishment wing. DSA-backed candidates won all three targeted congressional races. Darializa Avila Chevalier defeated five-term incumbent Adriano Espaillat. Brad Lander beat sitting Rep. Dan Goldman. Claire Valdez won the open seat vacated by Rep. Nydia Velázquez. All three victories came against candidates backed by labor unions, prominent elected officials, and the traditional Democratic machine.[3]
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, himself a Democratic Socialist of America (DSA) member, endorsed all three winning candidates and actively campaigned for them. His involvement turned the races into a direct test of whether his 2025 mayoral win was a one-time event or the start of something bigger. The results suggest it was the start. DSA members celebrated the wins as proof that democratic socialism is no longer a fringe movement in urban Democratic politics.[16]
Jeffries Said He’d Never Bow — Now His Allies Are Losing
Back in 2021, Jeffries made his position crystal clear. “There will never be a moment where I bend the knee to hard-left democratic socialism,” he said.[2] That line defined him as the moderate counterweight to the party’s far-left wing. He became House Minority Leader — the first Black person to lead a major party in Congress — in part because of that reputation.[1] But the 2026 primaries put that reputation to the test, and the results were not good for him.
Both Goldman and Espaillat held traditional campaign events with unions and big-name endorsers. Neither strategy worked.[21] After the losses, Jeffries told reporters he is “not making enemies on Capitol Hill by endorsing against incumbents right now.”[5] That response drew sharp criticism. DSA candidates won 3-for-3 in safe Democratic districts, and Jeffries’ answer was essentially to shrug. For many observers on both the left and the right, that looked less like leadership and more like retreat.
The “You’re Next” Warning Is Now Aimed at Jeffries Himself
At Claire Valdez’s victory party, DSA members turned their attention directly to Jeffries. Attendees chanted “You’re next!” — a clear signal that the movement sees him as its next target.[6] Shortly after, DSA-aligned New York City Council Member Chi Ossé filed paperwork to challenge Jeffries in a primary for his own congressional seat in New York’s 8th District.[6] The New York Times reported that DSA members are already discussing even bolder goals, including challenges to both Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer in 2028.[14]

Whether Jeffries can survive this pressure is an open question. DSA’s combined vote share in these races represented only about 3% of registered Democrats in New York City, which suggests low overall turnout helped them win.[6] Still, a movement that just knocked out two sitting members of Congress in a single night is not easy to dismiss. For everyday Americans — left or right — watching party insiders get outmaneuvered by a well-organized grassroots faction, the bigger story may simply be this: the old guard of both parties is losing its grip, and nobody in Washington seems to have a real plan to stop it.
