(PatriotsUnited.org) – A Russian politician claims that the United States is on the verge of a civil conflict following Donald Trump’s criminal conviction. Oleg Matveychev, a staunch supporter of President Vladimir Putin made the remarks on Russian state television.
Matveychev’s remarks came on the back of last Thursday’s decision by a New York jury to find Trump guilty of falsifying business records. The 34 charges relate to a hush money payment forwarded to adult film actress Stormy Daniels by Trump’s erstwhile lawyer Michael Cohen in 2016.. Trump continues to deny Daniels’ claim that she had a fling with him. The ex-president and presumptive GOP presidential nominee denied all charges.
Trump’s sentencing is set to take place on July 11th. Matveychev claimed that imprisoning Trump could discredit American society and possibly prompt civil war and a “new era” of the U.S. system, which could slide towards totalitarianism.
His alarming rhetoric has found echoes among Trump’s supporters in the U.S. On social media and at public protests; the term “civil war” has been frequently referred to since the verdict.
Protests also erupted outside Trump Tower in Manhattan, where the former president held a press conference, with demonstrators telling press the conviction could spark a civil conflict, and even a third world war. Matveychev, who was sanctioned by the United Kingdom in 2022 following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, further claimed that, “When the most popular man in the land is imprisoned” the U.S. has effectively become a “fascist” nation.
The reactions from Trump’s camp have been swift and vehement. Requests for comments from both the Russian embassy and Trump’s campaign have yet to be answered. As the U.S. braces for Trump’s sentencing and the Republican National Convention, the nation stands on edge, with Matveychev’s dire warnings adding fuel to an already fiery political landscape. Whether these predictions of civil unrest will come to pass remains to be seen, but the discourse surrounding Trump’s legal battles continues to polarize and provoke.
