(PatriotsUnited.org) – In a significant loss for Hollywood, revered celebrity agent Don Buchwald has died at the age of 88.
The influential figure in the entertainment industry died of natural causes on Monday at his Massachusetts home, surrounded by loved ones. Buchwald’s name was synonymous with star power, often affectionately dubbed “superagent” by his most famous client, Howard Stern. Stern, the renowned radio host, once likened Buchwald to Tom Hagen from “The Godfather,” highlighting his indispensable role in managing his career. Journalist Joe Flint wrote that Buchwald was crucial in “building” Stern’s top career. “He was also a smart guy to chat with about the media biz, particularly radio back in the day. RIP,” he continued via social media.
Buchwald’s illustrious career began in earnest in 1977 when he co-founded his agency alongside five associates. His vision and dedication swiftly turned his firm into a powerhouse, representing a diverse array of talent across commercial, broadcast, film, theater, television, and literary sectors. His client list reads like a who’s-who of Hollywood, including names like Jason Priestley, Jean Smart, Robert Patrick, Keith David, Jason Lee, and Holt McCallany. Additionally, he managed talents such as Natasha Henstridge, Dominic Monaghan, and Michael Rosenbaum.
Reflecting on Buchwald’s impact, Matthew Valentinas, a former intern at Buchwald’s agency, shared his memories on social media, stating that he hoped Buchwald would “RIP,” he reminisced over how his first-ever internship with Buchwald and how the latter’s brother would “roam” the office, working with soap opera stars and voice-over actors alike. He said he would hang up when manning the switchboard, and recalled “long hours copying and covering scripts.” He said the office’s seventh floor was full of Howard Stern merchandise.
Buchwald’s role in Stern’s career extended far beyond that of a traditional agent. He was Stern’s manager and publicist, orchestrating the deals that defined Stern’s career. Notably, he was the architect behind Stern’s monumental contract with SiriusXM, a deal reportedly valued at $90 million per year.
